Im 8. Jahrhundert holte der große tibetische König Trison Detsen Padmasambhava nach Tibet, "damit dieser die einheimische Seele zähme und das Erwachen des Dharma ermögliche. Padmasambhava beschwichtigte alle wichtigen nationalen Gottheiten, ließ das Kloster (Samye) erbauen, initiierte die Übersetzung der buddhistischen Lehren und übermittelte seinen 25 wichtigsten Schülern die esoterischen Lehren" (Rhie, Thurmann).
